Petronas, Malaysia’s leading oil and gas company, has signed 11 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing the country’s oil and gas services and equipment sector. The agreements, inked through Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), focus on boosting local capabilities and productivity within the industry.
The MoUs, which center on two major initiatives, represent a significant push towards modernizing Malaysia’s oil and gas infrastructure and workforce. The first initiative, “Yard Transformation and Productivity Enhancement,” saw Petronas collaborate with five top local fabrication yard contractors—Brooke, Ocean Might, Muhibbah Engineering, Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering, and Sapura Fabrication.
This initiative is part of Malaysia’s broader national strategy to rejuvenate the fabrication yard ecosystem. The transformation will focus on integrating advanced technologies, improving workforce skills, and expanding market opportunities to drive productivity across the sector.
The second initiative, “Skilled Trade Champion,” aims to address the demand for highly skilled tradespeople in critical areas such as rigging, blasting and painting, scaffolding, welding, and seafaring. Six agreements were signed with key industry players, including Epic OG, HHA Associates, Petra Resources, Sapura Fabrication, Turcomp Engineering, and the Malaysian Shipowners Association (MOSVA).
A key component of the Skilled Trade Champion initiative is the upskilling of Malaysian seafarers, with an emphasis on increasing the number of qualified officers for offshore marine operations. These efforts underscore Petronas’s commitment to strengthening the local workforce and ensuring sustainable growth within the oil and gas industry.
