Irving Oil Corp. announced on Thursday a $100 million investment to modernize a crucial crude processing unit at its Saint John refinery in New Brunswick, Canada’s largest facility with a capacity of 320,000 barrels per day.
The upgrade will focus on enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the refinery’s fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU), a vital component responsible for producing refined products such as gasoline and diesel.
Serving markets across Atlantic Canada and the northeastern United States, the Saint John refinery plays a key role in regional fuel supply. “We are looking to the future, knowing that demand for traditional energy products will continue to grow. This FCCU upgrade project is an important investment in energy security for all the regions we serve,” said Jeff Matthews, an executive at Irving Oil, in an official statement.
The company also noted that the project will create approximately 675 skilled jobs, primarily for workers from New Brunswick.
Irving Oil has yet to provide details on the project timeline or potential impacts on refinery operations.
